Jan Hendrickse

Dr. Jan Hendrickse is an artist, performer, researcher, and educator, working across concert performance, installation, and dance. He has collaborated with artists such as Ornette Coleman, Mark Fell, Rian Treanor, and David Toop, and frequently appears as a soloist on traditional instruments for major film scores. Designing and modifying instruments for performance, he specializes in self-made and traditional flutes, including the Turkish Ney, Tanzanian Filimbi, Chinese Xiao and Dizi, and Rajasthani Satara and Alghoza.
Jan has taught Turkish Ney at the Yunus Emre Institute and led socially engaged projects worldwide, including in Gambia, Thailand, Germany, and Palestine. He has lectured on practice-based research at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama, chaired discussions with figures such as Georgina Born and Mark Fell, and been a visiting lecturer at ZKM Karlsruhe and Trinity Laban. His PhD explored epistemic models in creative practice, and he has recently been conducting postdoctoral research on a new feedback instrument at The Intelligent Instruments Lab in Reykjavik.at Bath Spa University.
